I’m a child of the 80’s. (I was born in the 70’s, which means that all of my actual “growing-up memories” are from the 1980s.) Back then, those of us without cable had just a few channels (PBS, CBS, ABC, NBC, and maybe an independent one or two… no FOX yet!) and what TV there was, we knew really well.
This site celebrates those days… and particularly the local programming that was available. In Minnesota, at least, we loved our television news anchors. They were minor (or not-so-minor) celebrities, and they felt like family who joined us at the dinner table or tucked us in to bed at night.
Those of us with the occasional crush on a newscaster might have wished she were tucking us in to bed at night, but that’s another story.
What’s one word that summarizes those television personalities! Big Hair! Okay, that’s two words. But it might as well be one, because “hair” and “big” went together like “television” and “woodgrain-plastic box.”
